Patrice D. Johnson

Patrice D. Johnson is a journalist with more than 20 years experience as a magazine reporter and writer, covering a broad range of issues relating to national affairs, African Americans, business and personal finance. She was born in New York City, of Jamaican parentage, and grew up in Harlem and the Bronx. She graduated from Barnard College in New York, with a BA in English, and has a master's degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She currently resides on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

  • At present Patrice works as a freelance writer and editing professional. Projects include working with an author on his memoir and copy editing and proofreading for Kaplan K12 Learning Services.
  • She taught high school English and journalism for two years as a New York City Teaching Fellow.
  • She worked as a staff reporter for Money magazine from 1997 to 2001,where she covered consumer spending and saving, workplace/careers and investing for the nation's leading personal finance magazine.
  • Before that, Patrice worked as a reporter and researcher for Newsweek magazine, from 1981 to 1996, covering national affairs, as well as lifestyle and society. Shortly after graduating from journalism school, she went to work for Encore American & Worldwide News, the black news magazine, founded by former Essence editor Ida Lewis and poet/author Nikki Giovanni. She has written freelance articles for Black Enterprise, The Black Scholar and TV Guide, among other publications.
